Our Projects

Christ Cares Children's Centre

Buildings alone won't make Mama Mercy's orphans' centre operational or sustainable. So HUFA helped Mama Mercy procure a one-time $21,000 donation from Australia's Planet Wheeler Foundation to help drill a bore-hole well, and subsidized the remaining costs thanks to our first annual fundraising event held in September 2008. The new well will provide for the orphanage and be the lifeblood of the surrounding community. As Mama Mercy has said "Water is Life!"

And with the generous support of Lush Fresh Handmade Cosmetics, money from the sale of their Charity Pot lotion will complete and furnish all of the infrastructure needed to make the centre operational.

Lunch Program

Daily life for many Kenyans became even more dire in 2008; low levels of rain and global economic changes prompted the Kenyan government to declare a state of emergency throughout the country. So as finances allow, we also help fund a daily lunch program for up to 100 children in Ongata-Rongai run by Mama Mercy and several church and community members.

The lunch program started when fellow Vancouverite Bart Sullivan teamed up with Mama Mercy to help address an immediate need: during the December school break, children would be without their only guaranteed meal of the day. The momentum of this spontaneous program carried on past the break to provide food on other holidays. It now provides daily food for children and elderly who are in greatest need.

The monthly cost is $1400 but may continue to escalate given recent famine and increases in global food prices.

Child Sponsorship

HUFA is also providing school sponsorship for two at-risk girls from Rescue Dada Centre - a Nairobi rehabilitation centre for street girls. (This commitment was made immediately after Avchen's death in lieu of our ability to locate Mama Mercy.) Two young girls are now attending boarding school, where they have education, food, and safe shelter.
